Next week we will begin working on your character designs! I’m a firm believer that if an artist is excited about a project then the enjoyment will be maximized as will the effort. So ideally each of you will start next week with a character design that excites you to build!

So this week I’d like you to explore ideas for your character. Are they female or male? Are they in the sci-fi genre, medieval genre, modern warfare, etc? You can bring existing characters like Wolverine or the Hulk if you want, but I don’t think we’d be able to use your work in a ‘look what other workshop students achieved’ kind of way due to copyright issues. Alternatively you can draw your own custom design if you’re so inclined or bring a collection of ideas that you’ll combine to create a unique character (like the shoulder pad from this guy, the helmet from this guy, the clothes from this guy, etc).

If you don’t have go-to art sites to draw inspiration from, check out artstation.com or simply search ‘character design’ at pinterest.com to explore ideas.

Then feel free to post your ideas here to bounce off me and/or each other!

That’s a great choice, @shulito! It’s a similar genre to the character I build through the workshop so all the information will be very relevant to that genre. That guy is badass!

@Julian that guy looks pretty sweet. I’m thinking something medieval/fantasy too.

Here is a few concepts I really like. Any advice on what one would be best for this workshop?

@glenjohnston: Honestly, all 3 would be excellent candidates for this workshop!

Regarding that first concept’s mech elements: There’s not much hard-surface technique covered in the workshop curriculum, but if you’ve watched the sci-fi helmet course then you’ve got some support for tackling those.

The last concept is the most similar to the character that you’ll see me create throughout the workshop. But the first two are maybe a little ‘cooler’ in my opinion.

You can’t make a bad choice between those 3!

    Cheers Kent.

I am probably more experienced in hard surface modelling than sculpting so I’m comfortable with those elements. I will make final decision tonight.

The latests concepts were from Parks. My profile name was showing up as “Accounts” for some reason.

@parksgettys – All 4 of those are excellent choices. Each would be served really well by the curriculum. Any of those 4 is a great option!

@Julian Looks like a blast to model!

@Glen I wonder which one you chose. Can’t wait. The ref sheet on the last one is pretty cool.

@Parks The first and last two are a nice mix of anatomy and outfit. The warrior knight has some really awesome armor.

@slugoro – Ooo that’s a cool character ref sheet! Lots of fabric it seems, which will look awesome. Good stuff!
